The Tornado Storm Shelter Prototypes using Reinforced Concrete Masonry is a resource for architects, engineers, and contractors to assist in the design and construction of tornado storm shelters utilizing reinforced concrete masonry for the wall structure. Developed by the Masonry Institute of St. Louis (MISL) through a grant from the NCMA Education and Research Foundation, this guide details the process for design of three prototype buildings related to education projects using concrete masonry to meet the requirements for storm shelters outlined in ICC 500, Standard for the Design and Construction of Storm Shelters, and the International Building Code. This guide, along with structural drawings for all three prototypes is a valuable research to demonstrate how to design and construction storm shelters to keep occupants safe in tornado events.
