CMHA’s Nick Lang Receives ASTM International Honorary Membership for Leadership in Masonry Standards

The Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association (CMHA) announced that Nick Lang, CMHA’s Vice President of Engineering-Masonry, has been awarded Honorary Membership by ASTM International Committee C15 on Masonry –  Manufactured Masonry Units, Mortars and Grouts, recognizing nearly two decades of exceptional service and leadership in the development of masonry standards.

ASTM International is a globally recognized standards organization that develops and publishes voluntary consensus standards used worldwide to improve product quality, safety and performance. Committee C15 focuses specifically on manufactured masonry units, helping ensure materials meet rigorous performance expectations.

Honorary Membership is among the highest distinctions granted by ASTM committees, reserved for individuals who demonstrate sustained, high-level contributions that advance technical excellence and industry progress.

“Since Nick joined the now merged committees of ASTM C15 and C12, he has been tireless in his efforts to move ASTM masonry-related standards forward,” said Mark McGinley, former Chair of ASTM Committee C15, who presented Nick Lang with the award. “His effort has been significant from day one, with him receiving numerous awards from ASTM, including the President’s Leadership Award, and the Award of Merit.  His technical knowledge, leadership and commitment to consensus and dedication to continuous improvement of our standards has had, and continues to have, a lasting impact on the continued growth and relevance of masonry in the U.S. and around the world.”

Lang became an ASTM member in 2006 and has since played a central role in shaping the standards that guide concrete masonry manufacturing and testing across North America. Since 2009, he has served as Chair of Subcommittee C15.03 on Concrete Masonry Units and Related Units, the primary body responsible for many of the standards relied upon by CMHA members. He has also served as Recording Secretary for Committee C15, participated on its Executive Subcommittee, and led numerous task groups supporting industry standards development.

Throughout his career, Lang has been a leading advocate for strong, relevant standards, viewing them as the backbone of material manufacturing and resilient construction.

“Standards are critical for what we do as an industry, from how materials are tested to how they’re ultimately used in the field,” said Lang. “I’ve always enjoyed digging into the details, solving problems and helping make things better. ASTM has been an incredible platform for collaboration and progress, and I’m truly honored to receive this recognition from colleagues I respect so deeply.”

This award is not the end of his service, though. In addition to continuing his technical leadership, Lang plans to focus on mentoring the next generation of industry professionals, encouraging younger engineers and technical staff to engage in ASTM committees and step into future leadership roles.

“Nick has always been driven by a deep commitment to moving our industry forward,” said Bob Thomas, CMHA’s President & CEO. “From advancing quality, performance and innovation in concrete masonry to helping develop the next generation of leaders, Nick leads with both expertise and heart. He’s a tireless advocate for our members and a steady force pushing our industry to be stronger and better. This honor reflects the impact he’s had across our community, and we’re incredibly proud to see his leadership recognized.”
